It's official -- I'm teaching two introductory sewing classes this spring in Gainesville! The classes are scheduled so that you can take them back to back, if you're interested. Here are the details:

Sewing: Learn to Use a Sewing Machine
Sunday, March 1 -- 9 a.m.-noon
Take the mystery out of sewing and learn how to use a sewing machine. Course is taught by Kim Taylor, aka “The Sassy Crafter” (, who will teach the basics of threading the machine, winding a bobbin, straight stitching, back stitching, zig-zag stitching and other key topics. You'll even leave with a finished project!

Sewing: Learn to Work with Patterns

Sunday, March 1 -- 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
This is a great class for anyone who already knows how to use a sewing machine but doesn’t know how to work with patterns. The class is taught by Kim Taylor, aka “The Sassy Crafter” (, who will teach you the basics of working with commercial patterns, whether you want to make clothes, crafts, or other fun things. The instructor will guide each student through making a pair of simple drawstring pants (great for casual wear or pajamas).

For full details and registration, visit the UF Leisure Course site.

This is probably a stupid question, but do we need to have a sewing machine right away - for "homework"?

Kim said...

The class meets only once, so there isn't any homework. But once you get bit by the sewing bug, you might decide you want a machine.

Hi there Kim!
Your second class at UF for working with patterns is already full :(
Is there any way that you can extend the limit or will you be offering another class very (very) soon??

Kim said...

Hi Jennifer! Thanks for your interest. I don't feel I can extend the limit because the class needs to be small enough so that I can give everyone whatever help they need.

If all goes well I'll be offering the class again, hopefully in the summer semester. Stay tuned here on my blog for more information.

UPDATE: It turns out there is one space left in the Sewing: Learn to Work with Patterns. The online system is wrong. Email me directly by Thursday if you want the spot and I'll put you in touch with the Leisure Course manager. sassycrafter(@)gmail(dot)com

Please tell me you are offering this to the general public over the summer, if so that would be a wonderful way to spend my summer up here for school!!

Yes, I also would love to know if you are offering a summer course--with 3 boys, I REALLY need to learn how to sew!

Good news -- I'm offering more classes in June 2009. Details are here.

Hi Robin! Yes, I'll be offering sewing classes this summer. I should have the schedule finalized this week, and I'll put up a new blog post once I do. Please check back!

Just wondering when your next beginner class will be? How much are the classes?

As of Spring 2012, my sewing classes are on hold as I adjust to my new life as a mom. I'll post details here and on my other website,, when I'm ready to start teaching again. Thanks for your understanding!
